Butch

Butch is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographers’ prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 05/09/89 and we estimated he was born during 1983. He arrived at Monkey World at the same time as Charlie. Butch has quite a strong personality but gets on well with the others and has become the dominant chimp in the bachelor group.

Ben

Ben is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was born at Monkey World on 19/09/01 after his mother’s birth control did not work. After a long labour, Peggy delivered him naturally but she showed no interest in picking up or caring for her baby. Ben’s early years were spent with Pip while being cared for by the Primate Care Staff. Ben is now developing into a fine young chimp.

Buxom is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who arrived from Windsor Safari Park, when it closed down, on 31/05/93 and was born on 29/01/82. Çarli

Çarli (pronounced Charlie) is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who arrived at Monkey World on 24/05/02 and was born on 20/11/93 in the United States. He was captive born for the entertainment industry and appeared in the Jungle Book movie. As a television actor, he would have been taken from his mother at birth. Since 1998, Çarli has been working in Turkey making a television series. His last owners realised that what he needed was companionship of his own kind and asked Monkey World to give him a retirement home and a family of his own kind.

Freddy

Freddy is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was found wandering alone in a park in Austria. He was probably a pet that someone released when they no longer wanted him. He arrived at the park on 24/11/95 and we estimate he was born 1989. Freddy is one of the most humanised chimpanzees we have ever rescued. He did not understand chimpanzee behaviour but he now lives with the boys and they all seem to love him.

Gypsy Countries of rescue/origin: Gypsy

Gypsy is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was born at an Israeli Zoo and was kept with three smuggled babies when they were first confiscated by the Israeli authorities. He arrived on 28/08/96 and was born on 26/07/94. When he first arrived he seemed unsure of himself and easily upset. However, Gypsy has come on in leaps and bounds and is now much more confident living with the Bachelor group.

Jestah

Jestah is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who arrived from Windsor Safari Park on 31/05/93 and was born on 28/12/81. Jestah has a strong alliance with Buxom which helps to keep them both very dominant in the group. From time to time Jestah has an eczema-type condition that flares up.

Jimmy

Jimmy is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographers’ prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 14/07/87 and we estimate he was born during 1983. When he first arrived he was very humanised and wanted to socialise with humans rather than chimpanzees. Jimmy used to be Paddy’s second in command but was moved in with the boys when he started to challenge Paddy’s authority. He has settled in very well with the boys.

Kyko

Kyko is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 05/07/91 and he was born during 1987. His previous owner in Spain dragged him around on roller skates, which did not fit his feet and, as a result, Kyko was crippled when he first arrived at the park. With proper exercise, Kyko’s feet and legs are fine now and he is a very sociable chimp that gets along with the others.

Mojo

Mojo is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 05/07/91 and we estimate he was born during 1988. His previous owner tried to keep Mojo quiet by giving him valium so when he arrived at the park he was an addict. Mojo keeps himself out of trouble and gets on well with the others in the group.

Pacito

Pacito is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was rescued from a garden shed in Barcelona. He arrived at the park on 07/11/97 and we estimate that he was born during 1990. When he arrived he could not climb and he did not know how to behave like a chimpanzee. Pacito took a long time to learn how to behave like a chimp but he learned a lot from Charlie. Now he gets along well with everyone in the bachelor group and is particularly close to Freddy.

Arfur
Paco

Paco is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was going to be used as a photographer’s prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 24/04/92 and we estimate he was born during 1991. Paco started off in Paddy’s group but was moved in with the bachelor boys when the rest of Paddy’s group took a stand against him.

He still has quite a nervous character.

Sammy

Sammy is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 14/07/87 and we estimate he was born during 1982. Sammy has droopy ears and scars which are the result of cigarette burns from his previous owner. One of his favourite activities is displaying with great leaps as he pounds and stomps his feet. Sammy has a nice character and usually manages to stay out of trouble. He seems to be unaware of any politics within the group and always manages to have a good time.

Seamus

Seamus is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was born on 02/03/99 at Monkey World after his mother, Cherri, had removed her birth control implant! Cherri tried to look after Seamus but started setting him down to go off and play. Left on his own Seamus could have been hurt by the others. The Primate Care Staff looked after Seamus for the first year of his life until he was old enough to join the chimpanzee nursery. Seamus has now moved to the Bachelor Group joining some old friends that previously came from the Nursery Group.
