bart’s Chimpanzees

Athena

Athena is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was confiscated from a circus in Greece after being smuggled from the wild. She arrived on 11/12/93 and we estimate she was born during 1992. The Greek Government requested that Athena be sent to Monkey World to be rehabilitated with others of her own kind. She has a friendly character and gets very excited at feed times.

Bart

Bart is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was born at the park on 17/07/07. His birth was planned as we allow one baby every 5+ years in our mixed sex groups. Chimpanzee infants play an important part in chimp society and are cherished and well protected by the other chimps. Sadly, Bart lost his mother when he was just six years old. The rest of the group stepped in to support the youngster allowing him to eventually become the dominant male in his group.

Beth

Beth is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain.  She arrived in the park on 13/07/87 and we estimate she was born during 1982.  Beth is missing four toes on her right foot probably a result of being shot or captured by a snare trap in the wild.  She arrived at our half-way house in a poor condition with infected wounds and suffering from malnutrition.  Beth loves her food, is very playful, and is the dominant female in her group.

Bixa

Bixa is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) from Windsor Safari Park.  She arrived at the park on 31/05/93 and was born during 1977 at Port Lympne Zoo.  Bixa has lost muscle control of the left side of her face probably as the result of a stroke. When she was at Windsor she gave birth to Arfur but did not produce enough milk to feed him.

Busta

Busta is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographers’ prop during the day and as a circus entertainer during the evenings in Spain.  He arrived at the park on 13/07/87 and we estimated he was born during 1980.  When Busta first arrived he was quiet and very aggressive.  We discovered that Busta had infected teeth and after the dentist visited he became friendlier.  Busta loves playing with all the other chimps.

Cathy

Cathy is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was rescued from a French laboratory.  She arrived at the park on 24/04/90 and we estimate that she was born during 1981.  Cathy has a tattoo on her inner thigh, 551, which was used as an identity number in the lab.  Cathy is a large individual for a female. She has a stubborn side to her character, particularly about moving from the play area in the mornings.

Chatta

Chatta is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographers’ prop in Spain.  She arrived at the park on 23/11/90 and we estimate she was born during 1989.  Once confiscated, she was cared for by a Spanish vet until she could come to Monkey World.  She has found her place as a mid-ranking female and gets on well with everyone.

Cindy

Cindy is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographers’ prop in Spain.  She arrived at the park on 13/07/87 and we estimate she was born during 1979.  Cindy has three nipples.  When she was used on the beaches she was forced to wear sandals and as a result she had difficulty walking.  Her general health was extremely poor and she suffered from malnutrition.  Cindy’s rehabilitation was slow so she remained at the half-way house for a long time. Cindy is a dominant female and has a strong but outgoing character.

Clin

Clin is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was rescued from a laboratory in France.  She arrived at the park on 24/04/90 and we estimate that she was born during 1982.  Clin is blind in her right eye and has a tattoo, 552, on the inside of her thigh. The three French laboratory chimps were captured in the Congo region of Africa and their heavy eyebrows and lanky bodies are typical of this region.  No one dares to get on the wrong side of Clin, particularly at feeding time, when she collects as much food as possible into a pile.  Clin has an obsessive/compulsive nature that we think is linked to her time in the laboratory.

Eddi

Eddi is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was born at the park on 23/09/01 after her mother’s birth control failed. Luckily, Eddi’s mum, Susie, turned out to be an excellent mother and cared for her very well. The group have always looked after Eddi and protected her. Eddi is a low ranking chimp and remains very close to her brother, Bart.

Gamba

Gamba is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was rescued in Spain. He arrived at the park on 24/04/92 and we estimate he was born during 1991.  Gamba is a small male.  He was rescued off the boat that smuggled him out of Africa, so he was never used as a photographers’ prop.  He was confiscated at the same time as chimpanzee Paco.  Gamba is confident, ambitious and is always getting up to mischief.

Grisby

Grisby is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was rescued from a French laboratory.  She arrived at the park on 24/04/90 and we estimate she was born during 1980.  Grisby has a tattoo on the inside of her leg, 550, which was her ID number in the lab.  When she first arrived she was thin, weak, and had very little muscle.  She needed acclimatising to larger areas and greater freedom.  Grisby is now a well established and settled member of her group.

Lola

Lola is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain.  She arrived at Monkey World on 10/11/93 and we estimate she was born during 1988.  She has scarring on her top lip from what was either a previous injury to her lip or a hair-lip from birth. Lola has a nervous character and is low ranking within the group.

Micky

Micky is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain.  He arrived at the park on 13/07/87 and we estimate he was born during 1982.  When he first arrived he was very shy, keeping to himself at all times.  Now he stands up for himself and has proved to be a self-assured character with many friends in the group.  Micky particularly likes playing with the younger members of the group and Busta.

Peppa

Peppa is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was used as a photographer’s prop in Spain.  She arrived in the park on 10/11/93 and we estimate she was born during 1987.  Peppa arrived at the same time as chimpanzees Sally and Lola.  She gets on well with the other females but she is not a high-ranking chimpanzee and is usually sitting on the fringes of the group.  From time to time the psychological scars of her past come to the surface and Peppa will pretend to roll-up and smoke straw like a cigarette.

Sasha

Sasha is a female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) that was born at the former Buenos Aires Zoo on 17/09/1997. As she was not on birth control, she got pregnant by her father and gave birth to Kangoo in 2007. In 2016 the government decided to close the zoo and re-home non-native wildlife but as Sasha’s father was elderly, they decided not to move the chimps until he had died. In 2021 Monkey World was contacted and asked to take the two remaining chimps. Sasha and Kangoo arrived at Monkey World on 31/08/22. On attempts to introduce both chimps into the same group, Sasha was too domineering and controlling of her son. Once separated, Sasha has made great progress meeting Bart’s group.
