The premature baby orang-utan that's just happy to be monkeying around

10 February 2015

Rieke the baby orang-utan is off-the-scales cute, despite being just 4lbs at birth.

Buckets of fun: Rieke

She doesn’t look too chilled during a weigh-in, but this little bowlful of fun had better get used to the cold – as she’s coming to our shores soon.

But her mother failed to bond with her at their home in Berlin Zoo, so the mite will quit Germany for a sanctuary here.

Nappy days: Rieke

Now nearly a month old, she has been raised by keepers who bottle-feed her, change her tiny nappy and give her a bed of snuggly blankets so she can get plenty of beauty sleep before the big move.

She will be well looked after at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset, where she will have a friend in orphaned five-month-old Sumatra orang-utan Bulu Mata.

One fan raved online: “This little girl is sugar-rush cute!” We’re bowled over, too.
